The most dangerous effect of patent trolls is coming out: a retired ex-Microsoft executive threatens all the most important internet firms by making use of software patents.
It would be interesting what the USPTO (the USA Patent Office) management thinks of this.
It's also unclear why Allen is doing this: is why Microsoft is struggling to maintain its competitive position now that cloud apps and mobile technologies have eroded its market?

The era of Microsoft-Intel war is over - says this Economist's article. New companies will battle for IT dominance.
It's strange to see consumer-focused companies (such as Apple and Google) listed head-to-head with companies that serve business-to-business markets (such as IBM or Oracle).
